Holiday Lights of Niagara Trail kicks off Wednesday in Hyde Park

NIAGARA FALLS - The annual Holiday Lights of Niagara Trail will open Wednesday night in Hyde Park.

A free kickoff event will be held near Sal Maglie Stadium at 5:30 p.m. including an appearance by Santa Claus and performances by local dance and choir groups.

The lighted displays will be illuminated at the conclusion of the kickoff event and will be followed by a fireworks display.

Niagara Falls City Council to take up proposed changes to next year's budget

The Niagara Falls City Council has called a meeting for 4:30 p.m. Monday to discuss potential changes to the mayor's proposed spending plan for 2014.

What those changes might be have yet to be disclosed by the Council. The proposed amendments "are being prepared" and copies will be made available to the press at the meeting, said Kevin Ormsby, the Council's secretary.

Hamister project in Niagara Falls takes next step

A $25.3 million project with an upscale hotel, apartments and retail space in downtown Niagara Falls is moving forward.

As reported in a story published on BuffaloNews.com late Monday afternoon, the Hamister Group, the City of Niagara Falls and the state's USA Niagara Development Corp. have completed a development agreement for the project at 310 Rainbow Blvd.

Public meetings in Niagara Falls government this week

The Niagara Falls Public Library board of trustees was scheduled to meet Wednesday. The meeting has been postponed until Dec. 4.

The Niagara Falls Water Board will hold a work session at 5 p.m. Thursday at the municipal water plant, 5815 Buffalo Ave.

The Niagara Falls School Board will hold an agenda review session at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the district’s central office, 630 66th St. The board’s regular meeting will follow at 7.

Holiday Wonderfest planned at Niagara Falls Public Library

The Friends of the Niagara Falls Public Library is sponsoring a Holiday Wonderfest at the main branch, 1425 Main St., on Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Free activities will be available for all ages including live entertainment, crafts and a visit from Santa Claus. There will also be a chance to meet local authors and check out a vendors market and basket auction.

Indiana firm finalizes purchase of Falls power plant

An Indiana company has finalized its purchase of a Niagara Falls power plant, where it plans to hire at least 20 new employees.

Sterling Energy Group, which is based in Gary, Ind., bought the Niagara Generation plant on Frontier Avenue from US Renewables Group of Santa Monica, Calif., Sterling announced this week.

Airline that flies into Niagara Falls using Toronto mayor in ads

One of the discount regional airlines that flies into Niagara Falls International Airport is using a reference to Toronto Mayor Rob Ford's recent admission to smoking crack in its advertisements on its website.

Spirit Airlines is pitching its low fares by assuring customers "We're not smoking crack."

Audio: Dyster says agreement with Hamister could be done as soon as Friday

Earlier this week, Mayor Paul A. Dyster told the City Council a development agreement with the Hamister Group for a $25 million downtown hotel, apartment and retail project could be signed as soon as Friday.

Attorneys are still in the process of finalizing the contract, and "nothing new" compared to what was presented two months ago has appeared as the sides continue to work, Dyster told lawmakers.

Preservation group to start giving tours of Niagara Falls State Park

Starting next year, Preservation Buffalo Niagara is adding guided tours of Niagara Falls State Park to its repertoire.

The group announced in an email late last week it was adding the Falls tours to its list of existing tours, which includes daily tours of Buffalo's City Hall, as well as tours of downtown Buffalo and other neighborhoods.
