Falls lawmakers to consider opposing proposed charter school

The Niagara Falls City Council is expected to vote tonight on a measure opposing the establishment of a new charter school.

A group has applied to the state to create the Academy of Learning and Leadership Charter School within the city limits.

The resolution before the Council urges the Board of Regents and the state to "reject the establishment of an additional charter school in Niagara County." (To view the resolution, scroll to the second-last page of the second document below.)

Public meetings in Niagara Falls government this week

The City Council will hold a 5 p.m. Committee of the Whole meeting Monday, followed by a regular meeting at 6 in City Hall, 745 Main St.

The School Board will hold an agenda review session at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the district’s central office, 630 66th St. A special meeting in which the administration will recommend a budget for the 2014-15 school year will follow at 7 p.m.

Sharpton's daughter to speak at Falls conference for teens, young women

Sharpton_dominiqueDominique Sharpton, daughter of civil rights activist Al Sharpton, will be a guest presenter at the Niagara Falls Housing Authority's "Let's Talk" Conference on Friday.

The annual event, aimed at encouraging dialogue with teens and young women, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Doris W. Jones Family Resource Building, 3001 Ninth St., Niagara Falls.

“The annual “Let’s Talk” Conference was developed to provide emerging female leaders with access to successful role models and workshops that educate and provide a toolbox of life skills that can help them on their success journey,” Housing Authority Executive Directdor Stephanie W. Cowart said in a written statement.

See the state's request for outdoor recreation development in Niagara Falls (pdf)

From the north Grand Island bridges to Devil's Hole State Park, Niagara Falls has about 11 miles of waterfront.

The state sees the area as perfect for various types of outdoor recreation opportunities - from horseback riding to zip lining to rappelling into the Niagara Gorge.

Earlier this month, the state asked for interest parties to submit proposals to bring this vision to fruition.

Falls Memorial getting new 'dining experience' in partnership with Niagara University

It looks like there's going to be a new place to eat at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center.

Officials from Memorial and Niagara University on Tuesday are slated to announce "a whole new dining experience for visitors, employees and volunteers," according to a flier circulated Monday.

Help offered to get more Niagara Falls businesses online

Small businesses in Niagara Falls that lack a website - and are missing out on possible customers - can get some help establishing an online presence at a workshop Thursday.

The event, which coincides with Google's "Get Your Business Online" Week, is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Conference & Event Center Niagara Falls, 101 Old Falls St.

Google is offering web development tools and one year of free hosting for companies' websites.

Public meetings in Niagara Falls government this week

NFC Development Corp. will meet at 4 p.m. Monday in Council Chambers in City Hall, 745 Main St.

The Urban Renewal Agency will meet at 4:30 p.m. or immediately after the NFC Development Corp. meeting Monday in Council Chambers.

The Tourism Advisory Board will meet at 6 p.m. Monday in Room 117 in City Hall.

Construction to turn former Fallside Hotel into Doubletree by Hilton expected to start mid-summer

Construction is expected to begin sometime in mid-summer on a Doubletree by Hilton hotel project at the site of the former Fallside Hotel on Buffalo Avenue.

The Niagara Falls Zoning Board of Appeals on Tuesday night granted three variances to a Canadian hotelier planning to revive the shuttered hotel.

The board approved a variance allowing the project, being undertaken by Merani Hospitality LLC, to have 60 extra parking spaces, as well as exceptions to required setbacks.
