Public hearing on proposed charter school in Niagara Falls set for April 30

A public hearing on the proposed charter school in Niagara Falls will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 30 in Niagara Falls High School, 4455 Porter Road.

A group has asked the state for permission to start the Academy of Learning and Leadership Charter School at a yet-to-be-determined location in the city. If approved, it would be the first charter school within the city limits.

Under the proposal, the school would open in the fall of 2015 with kindergarten and first grade, adding another grade level each year until fifth grade is added in 2019-20. Project total enrollment in that fifth year is 452 students.

The proposal is being opposed by officials in the Niagara Falls School District, in part because they say the school would divert $5.2 million in funding from the district.
