Public hearing Thursday on Niagara Falls' proposed school budget

A public hearing on the proposed 2014-15 budget for the Niagara Falls School District will be held Thursday night in Niagara Falls High School, 4455 Porter Road.

The proposed $126 million spending plan represents an increase in annual spending of about 1.9 percent. It also calls for using about $2.7 million in "one-time" revenues that won't be available for the 2015-16 budget.

Public meetings in Niagara Falls government this week

The Tourism Advisory Board will meet at 6 p.m. Monday in Room 117 in City Hall, 745 Main St.

The Housing Authority Board of Commissioners will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the authority’s executive offices at 744 10th St.

Niagara Falls School Board candidates forum set for May 13

A candidates forum for those running for Niagara Falls School Board will be held at 6 p.m. May 13 in Niagara Falls Public Library, 1425 Main St.

The event will be held in the second-floor auditorium.

Application withdrawn for proposed Niagara Falls charter school

A group seeking to start the first charter school in the City of Niagara Falls has withdrawn its application to the state, according to the State Education Department's website.

It wasn't immediately apparent why the application was pulled. Three of 11 other charter school applications from across the state were also withdrawn.

Public hearing on proposed charter school in Niagara Falls set for April 30

A public hearing on the proposed charter school in Niagara Falls will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 30 in Niagara Falls High School, 4455 Porter Road.

A group has asked the state for permission to start the Academy of Learning and Leadership Charter School at a yet-to-be-determined location in the city. If approved, it would be the first charter school within the city limits.

Audio: Niagara Falls School Board opens up in debate on tax increase

It's not that often a local governing body engages in a serious debate in as open a way as the Niagara Falls School Board did on Tuesday night.

Board members spent nearly an hour talking about the district's financial position, and whether things are going to be so bad for the 2015-16 budget that the district should raise taxes at least a little bit for the upcoming school year.

In other words, soften the blow a year from now by increasing taxes a smaller amount now.

Falls lawmakers to consider opposing proposed charter school

The Niagara Falls City Council is expected to vote tonight on a measure opposing the establishment of a new charter school.

A group has applied to the state to create the Academy of Learning and Leadership Charter School within the city limits.

The resolution before the Council urges the Board of Regents and the state to "reject the establishment of an additional charter school in Niagara County." (To view the resolution, scroll to the second-last page of the second document below.)

Public meetings in Niagara Falls government this week

The City Council will hold a 5 p.m. Committee of the Whole meeting Monday, followed by a regular meeting at 6 in City Hall, 745 Main St.

The School Board will hold an agenda review session at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the district’s central office, 630 66th St. A special meeting in which the administration will recommend a budget for the 2014-15 school year will follow at 7 p.m.
